Advice. Dont forget - Use sunglasses and skin and lip protection. At high altitudes (3,000m) it is easy to get badly burnt. The weather can change quickly so check out weather report before leaving. Cable-cars gain a lot of height very quickly so spend some time resting at the mid-point stops before rushing up to the top of the lifts. This will help avoid breathlessness and altitude sickness.

Weather in the Alps can be changeable so you need to be prepared for heat, rain and occasional cooler weather. Afternoon storms are not uncommon but usually pass quickly. The temperature in summer is usually 80 - 90 degrees.

Mont Blanc and Chamonix Valley - A walkers paradise!

On the meadow above Les Houches.                The Mont-Blanc Tram at the top of Bellevue above our chalet.

Hiking trails and mountain footpaths are everywhere. At The Skier's Lodge in Les Houches you are at the starting point of several trails including the famous10 day  'Tour Du Mont Blanc'.

Here are just a few of the other hikes and walks available:

Grand Balcon Nord - Start your holiday with a panoramic view of the valley and mountains. Ride the Aiguille du Midi cable-car to an altitude of 3842m and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Descend by cable-car back to the mid-station at Plan d'Aiguille and then walk the steep zig-zag, wooded track back down to Chamonix. (3 hours).

Grand Balcon Sud - View  the Mont Blanc massif from the other side of the Chamonix valley. Take the Brevent lift to the top station at 2525m, take lots of photos, then follow  GR5 south east (it's also the Tour of Mt. Blanc route - TMB on signposts). Hike along he ridge, past the refuge of Bel Lachet, down through the woods to the Merlet Animal Park and back to Les Houches or Chamonix (3 hours).

Mer de Glace Glacier - Take the Montenvers funicular railway from Chamonix up the Aiguilles de Chamonix to 1913m. Here there are spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. The upper station is poised on a rocky ridge overlooking the glacier. Take the small cable-car onto the glacier to visit the Ice Grotto. The glacier is the largest in France and is 7kms long and 200m deep! A collection of caves and ice sculptures can be explored. Afterwards, there are great alpine walks back to the Plan de L'Aiguille and the valley floor.

Lac du Brevent - Lovely deep water lake in a wild setting. From the summit of Brevent take the downhill path, the one going in the direction of Bel Achat. After 20 minutes, before the section called 'La Tranchee', which has a handrail, turn off to the right into a hollow and follow a badly marked path descending in the direction of the lake. (Ascent 1.30 hours. Return to Chamonix 3 hours).
